أعلن دونالد ترامب أنه وقع إعلانًا بفرض رسوم جمركية جديدة بنسبة 10% على الواردات من جميع البلدان، على أن تدخل حيز التنفيذ بشكل فوري تقريبًا، وذلك وفق ما ذكره في منشور عبر منصة تروث. وأوضح أن القرار تم توقيعه من المكتب البيضاوي، مشيرًا إلى أن الرسوم الجمركية العالمية الجديدة ستُطبق على جميع الدول دون استثناء. موقف هونج كونج من القرار من جانبه، قال مسؤول رفيع المستوى في هونج كونج إن فرض رسوم جمركية أمريكية جديدة بنسبة 10% على الواردات إلى الولايات المتحدة قد يعود بالفائدة على هونج كونج باعتبارها مركزًا تجاريًا عالميًا. وفي السياق ذاته، وصف كريستوفر هوي، وزير الخدمات المالية والخزانة، الوضع الجمركي في الولايات المتحدة بأنه فشل ذريع خلال مقابلة مع إذاعة هونج كونج التجارية، مؤكدًا أن الضريبة الجديدة تسلط الضوء على المزايا التجارية الفريدة لهونج كونج.
